Teach yourself how to play guitar

From child to adult, one of the most popular instruments that people want to learn to play is the guitar.  Acoustic, Electric, Classical, Rock, Blues, makes no difference but  although it may look quite simple, it is not. To be able to play well takes hours of practice and dedication but everyone starts on a level playing field – knowing nothing! Some will have a natural aptitude for it and others will not find it as easy but you can quite easily teach yourself guitar.

Basics first, if you look at a guitar, you will notice that there are usually 6 strings (although there can be 7 or 12). Each string is of a different thickness that when struck, will play a different note either E, A, D, G, B or E. When the strings are depressed between the different frets on the neck will change the note and certain combinations of this will produce specific chords.

One of the first things you need to learn when you teach yourself guitar is how to tune your instrument. If you can’t do that properly, there’s no point playing as it will sound pretty bad! To do this, you need to turn the small pegs on the headstock gradually until the string hits the right note. Unless you have perfect pitch, you will find an electronic tuner an invaluable aid.

It’s probably best to start at the beginning and master each step before trying to play more advanced music, even if it is tempting! The best way to start is to teach yourself guitar is learn to read a tablature for a song.

So what is tablature?

The 6 strings of the guitar are represented by six horizontal lines in a tablature. Each of the lines are marked alphabetically, starting with “E” from the top, and ending with “e”. There are also numbers placed on the horizontal lines that relate to which fret you should hold down for that string. For example, if you find number 2 appearing on the very bottom line, this would mean that you need to hold down the string “e” on to the second fret when you pluck the string. The space between each of the numbers that you find on the tablature provides a rough idea of the rhythm and timing.

If you see the mark “\”, this denotes that you should slide your fingers down the neck of the guitar and the mark “/” that you slide upwards. The tablature shows the notes as picked from left to right. The vibrato effect is when you hold down the string on the fret after a slide, and this would cause the string to ring. Other others include; “h” for a hammer-on. This is done by picking a note, and right after you have done that, you quickly press on the string on the designated fret to produce the sound. A “p” will denote the pull-off and this happens when you strike a note as you press down the string on to the fret and suddenly pull the string away from the neck of the guitar while you still hold the string slightly pressed on to the fret.

The tablature forms the basic part of learning how to play your guitar and you should keep practicing until you start to gain your confidence. As you begin to teach yourself guitar and your expertise improves, you can get different tablatures for different songs and learn how to play those songs in the same way.
